Dojo Etiquette

1. Do-gi (worn left side over right) and belt must be worn and tied properly at all times during training. If you need to adjust your clothing always face away from the direction of the front side of dojo and other peoples. Students need to keep the do-gi clean and tidy, and wearing the do-gi with specific dojo badge during the practice.(except for the dojo visitors)

2. Students should develop a good personal hygiene habit, keep the nails of hands and feet short and clean, and wear the long hair up. For the female students , the make-up have to be removed before the practice start.

3. It is not allowed to eat food or answer the phone on the training mat, and it is not allowed to drink alcohol before lessons in order prevent the dangerous during practice.

4. No footwear is allowed on the training mats. All shoes should be placed in neat rows at designated areas and pointing outwards.

5. Students should arrived the place where we have the lessons 15 mins before the start of practice. Students should put the mats in order , after the lesson put the mats back to storage room. If the mat is fixed, all the students should help with the cleaning .

6. When students enter or leave the dojo should bow to the front side of dojo. No matter in the dojo or not ,the student should greetings to the teacher and senior actively.

7. Upon entering and leaving the training mats, a kneeling bow must be made facing the direction of the front side of dojo. Place your left hand on the mat in front of you, then followed by your right hand, forming a triangle with your 2 thumbs and index fingers meeting at the tips. Bend forward and bow with your eyes tilting forward. Do nor lift your head up to see and also do not show your neck when bowing.

8. 2mins before the start of lesson , students should sit in a line and in a formal way. When the teacher enter the dojo, monitor should say “Class”, and wait for the teacher to start the lesson.

9. When students sit in a line , the order should arranged from high level to lower level from right to left. Students should check whether the line is straight and face to the center of the dojo.

10. When the lesson start , all the students should follow the teacher to say “Rei” (to show respect) and bow to the front of dojo, then all students bow to the teacher again at the same time say “ONEGAESHIMASU” . When the lesson is over, students repeat the rules but saying “ARIGATO-GOZAIMASHITA”(thank you very much).

11. Only when the teacher not teaching,the student can enter or leave the dojo. If the student is late for the lesson, it is not allowed to enter the dojo until the teacher finish the teaching. If student is late, and the other students are doing warm-up ,the student should walk to the edge of the mat and put the right hand up to ask for the allowance of entering the practice. After entering the mat ,student should kneeling bow to the teacher. If a student wants to leave first ,the student should get the allowance from teacher and bow before leaving the mat.

12. In the dojo , only allow to sit in a formal way. It is prohibit to lie on the mat or sit in other informal way. Except for the practice time, the student should not turn back to the teacher.

13. When students start or end the set routines, students should bow to each other to show respect. Allow the higher level student to do the action first , if two students have the same level , the one is skilled do first.

14. During the lesson time, when the teacher teaching the students, students should sit in a formal way and listening carefully. If the teacher teaching a specific student , the other students should keep a safe distance and wait for restart of practice. When the teaching is over, all the students should kneeling bow to the teacher to show thanks.

15. When the student to be selected to be the uke, it is a show of trusting to the student, the student should enter the teaching actively, student should take it as a glory.

16. During practice time, student should avoid the unnecessary talk, even need to talk in some special situation, the talking should not bother others. During the practice , the student hit others accidently should bow and say sorry to each other.

17. Lower level students should follow the instructions from teacher , it is not allowed to use the strong power when it is not necessary. Students should pay high attention on the practice, and prevent the rude practice to make sure the safe of partners.

18. During practice ,higher level student should take good care of lower level student, and teach lower level student carefully, so during every lesson student should change the partner and get the advantage from different people in order to improve youself.

19. When the student practice with a lower level should give a friendly and modest attitude. Don’t let the new student get a strange feeling, to keep a positive attitude to other students and have a good team spirit.

20. All students are prohibit to show hakedo skills in public place or teaching other until the student get the allowance from the teacher in order to prevent the unnecessary harm or shame from low understanding of hakedo skills.
